Lois Mailou Jones and a Mask Project

Feb 10, 2014

“”Mine is a quiet exploration—a quest for new meanings in color, texture and design. Even though I sometimes portray scenes of poor and struggling people, it is a great joy to paint.” — Lois Mailou Jones

Lois Mailou Jones was  born in 1905, and had a successful career as a painter, teacher, book illustrator and textile designer for over 50 years. She was born in Boston and became interested in art very early in her life.  Her art spans three continents: North America, Europe, and Africa and has participated in many group and solo shows of her work.

We were inspired by her iconic work: Les Fetiches which is an African inspired painting owned by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The students learned how to make their very own scratch boards and used them to create their masks.
