Day 8 – Itty Bitty Abstract Creations

May 8, 2020

Today we are going to create an abstract acrylic piece and then divide it into itty bitty pieces of art. Many artists regularly work in a series of paintings, the same subject matter or palette is used to create a cohesive body of work. Let’s try it!

Our lesson today is inspired by the contemporary mixed media artist, Jane Davies. Jane Davies is a full-time artist working in collage, painting, and encaustic. Please take a look at her work it will really inspire you to create!

Supplies:

  • watercolour paper
  • various colours of acrylic paint
  • paintbrush
  • water
  • paper towel

Wet your brush and start applying the paint that you have chosen. Fill the spaces as you like trying not to think about it too much. React to the colours and go where your brush leads you. You can wait for your first layer to dry or keep adding as it is wet to see how your colours mix together.

Once you have quite a few different colours layered on the paper and you are happy with the way it generally looks let it dry. Next, you can cut itty bitty pieces out that you really like. Study your piece and even lay paper around exciting parts of your painting and then mark that lightly with a pencil to cut out.

This is such an easy way to create multiple little pieces (these measure about 5cm by 5cm) that all relate to one another.
