Day 7 – Oodles of Flower Doodles

May 7, 2020

Flower Doodles inspired by Lisa Congdon and Alisa Burke

Today I am going to take you through one of my favourite ways to warm up for any kind of art-making, doodling. Just like playing a sport or instrument its a good idea to warm up your art-making muscles and exercise them regularly to get better at drawing.

I am also going to introduce you to two absolutely amazing artists who have inspired me many times throughout the years, Lisa Congdon and Alisa Burke.

Lisa Congdon is an illustrator, author and very talented and generous artist. She lives in Portland, Oregon and started making art when she was in her early 30’s. Since then her career has grown by leaps and bounds and I really encourage everyone to read her books, look at her art and follow her on social media. She is always inspiring…

Alisa Burke also lives in Oregon and is freelance painter and mixed media artist. She has been an artist all of her life and has a thriving career. She has many free tutorials on her website and is a constant place to seek inspiration. She loves to draw all kinds of things but especially flowers…

So let’s get started and be inspired by these two women to make some flower doodles.

Supplies:

  • sketchbook or paper, a heavier weight paper is best but any will work
  • black markers, fine tip and medium
  • pencil
  • Gelly roll pens or colourful markers
  • tape
  • black paint
  • old gift card

Use a pencil to write something that is inspiring you at the moment. And when you are happy with your words trace over it with a black marker. Now its time to doodle flowers. They can be all shapes and sizes, really fill the page with a variety and try to have some appear behind the other flowers.

For something different, you can create a black background using an old gift card and black paint. Tape a border around your page (I would only recommend this technique on watercolour paper or a heavy paper like bristol board) and put some tape at the top. Holding the card firmly pull the paint down the page. Let the first layer dry and apply a second layer. Let it dry.

Next use Gelly Roll pens, they are so much fun and I can’t recommend them enough for people who like to doodle.

I really hope you are inspired to create some flower doodles. Please send us a picture of what you create to artinactiontoronto@gmail.com. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram so you don’t miss a post.
