Day 18 – Victoria Day Fireworks

May 18, 2020

Today let’s be inspired by the fireworks that are used to celebrate Victoria Day and the unofficial beginning of summer.

Let’s get started by creating a black background. Tape a piece of watercolour paper to another sheet of paper so it is easier to use the scraping technique. Squeeze and line of paint along the tape and using an old gift card or sturdy piece of cardboard scrape the paint downwards until the page is filled. Let it dry and repeat.

Here are some of the other supplies you will need to create your fireworks:

  • fan brush
  • small acrylic paint brush
  • a variety of bright paints (I used flourescent pink orange and a lime green colour)
  • white paint

Using the fan brush apply a very small amount of paint to the middle of a firework and pull your paintbrush outwards. Repeat in a circle painting until you have a base layer that looks something like this:

Using your bright acrylic paints and your fan brush use the same technique to create a colour base layer.

Next use your small acrylic paint brush and your bright colours to create curved lines that begin in the middle of your firework and stretch outwards. Lastly do the same with the white paint.

A really fun way to finish your piece off is to use the hard end of your paintbrush to create stars or pinpoints of light in the sky by dipping it into the white paint and stamping it on the paper. Remember to use the hard end of your brush and not the brush end to create perfect round dots.

And there you go, fireworks! I hope you are all having a lovely long weekend and enjoying the moments.
