Day 1 – Acrylic Sponge Fun!

May 1, 2020

Today is the first day of our sparking creativity every day in May with Art in Action. We are so excited and hope you are too!

Let’s begin by creating with some acrylic paint and a small sponge. It’s super easy to do and the possibilities are endless…

Supplies:

  • small sponge
  • acrylic paint
  • watercolour paper (or another heavy type of paper)
  • tape for a frame around your piece
  • black paint and a small paintbrush

Wet the sponge and carefully squeeze out the water. Dip it in a colour and use a pouncing or stippling technique (dabbing up and down) as you apply it to the paper. Add another colour and keep going until the paper is filled. Ensure you go over the tape edges so you get a nice frame around your work.

After the background has dried, use some black paint to paint shapes and loose squiggly lines. Dip the paintbrush in water and splash a bit over the surface to create small dots.

Now you get to decide if you like your creation the way it is or if you want to crop or cut your piece to make the composition more dynamic and accentuate what you like and take away parts that you might not.

Here are my cropped pieces:

These are such a fun way to create cards, bookmarks, and abstract art for your walls. Please send us a picture if you create one, artinactiontoronto@gmail.com
