Art Supplies – What We Suggest

Apr 30, 2020

Chalks pastels

I hope you are going to join us to create every day in May with Art in Action. Each day we will post a new idea to spark your imagination and get you making some art. We regularly get asked what kind of supplies we use and where to get them. Here is a list of some basic supplies to have on hand and few fun ones to try out.

A variety of sketchbooks

Sketchbooks would be one of the first things I would recommend everyone have on hand. I usually have about 5 on the go and its a great place to try out new techniques and see how you progress over time. You can get almost all of the supplies I will mention at two Canadian art stores, Aboveground Art Supply’s and Curry’s, and at other major retailers as well.

Paper, lots and lots of paper! Watercolour paper is a fantastic way to do so many techniques and its the only type of paper we use in our classes.

Chalk pastels and oil pastels are a must-have for children and adults. They are very inexpensive and you can use them in endless ways.

Watercolour paint either in a set or the kind that we use, liquid watercolours. Watercolour paint is easy to use, easy to clean up and inexpensive.

Acrylic paint is so much fun and we recommend the craft paint that you can buy at the Dollar Store. Its inexpensive, the quality is good for beginners and they have a wide variety of colours. You can mix your own colour and add white and black to get a huge variety of hues.

And some fun supplies that I absolutely love…

  • Signo Uni-Ball white pens are also a great way to doodle over any painted surface.
  • Micron pens, inexpensive, permanent ink pens that are fantastic for doodles of any kind.
  • Gelly Roll pens, super fun colours and great for doodling or drawing over a variety of surfaces.
