Take a Dot for a Walk

Apr 15, 2020

It’s been a month since schools have closed in Ontario (can you believe it?) and we are all living in a new world. Self-isolating has children home all day every day and parents are trying to parent, teach, work and manage all of the changes that have taken place. Anyone finding that hard? I know from my own experience that every day is filled with ups and downs and it certainly isn’t easy.

There has never been a better time for everyone to explore the possibilities that making art opens up. Sometimes all that anyone needs is just a place to start.

Let’s start with a dot and see where it leads us…

This is a super simple way to just get a pen or pencil moving across a piece of paper. What you need:

  • A piece of paper, cardstock or watercolour paper is great but just any piece of white paper will work as well
  • Tape if you want a barrier around your drawing
  • A sharp pencil, fine black marker or even a ball point pen will work

What to do:

  • Draw a curvy line across your paper
  • Start anywhere and draw a smaller line, then repeat additional lines around the first one. Keep repeating a let the shapes change as you go…there is no one way to do this. Follow your pen and see where it leads!
