New Spring Session starts with a Lake Ontario Landscape

Apr 14, 2019

Our Spring session has Begun!  For this Spring session Art in Action will be inspired by famous artists and places in Toronto.  From a serene landscape of Lake Ontario, a view across the Humber River at the Old Mill Bridge, learning about the Fashion District and Graffiti Alley, taking a look at Casa Loma architecture, to capturing the CN Tower at sunset.  Our classes have an art history component that works with the elements and principles of design. Students will have the tactile experience of experimenting with a variety of art materials and techniques including: watercolours, acrylics, collage materials, oil pastels, chalk pastels and more.  This art enrichment program is geared for success with approachable step-by-step projects. Create a new piece each week.

This week we looked at all the different images of Lake Ontario; from a view from the top of the CN tower, to the Scarborough Bluffs and even satellite view from space. Students had a lot of fun creating their lake landscapes.   We started with watercolour for the sky and “pulled out” the clouds while watercolour was still wet.  Next, artists experimented with different blending techniques using acrylic paints to create their desired effects.  Some students created a more windy day with turbulent waters while others preferred a much calmer day. Take a look a few examples below…

Well done everyone!  It was fun to imagine we were all at the lake; enjoying the warm breezes with our easels and paints; painting “en plein air” somewhere on the lakefront in Toronto.  I think I can almost hear the gulls distant screeching, soaring through the clouds in the sky above.
