May 8, 2018

Last week our classes learned about the career and life of British painter, Maggi Hambling.

Students began their wave paintings by using chalk pastels to create their blue skies.

Next they layered acrylic paint and used expressive brush strokes to create movement and energy.

“My philosophy of life is that I am deeply, deeply serious about my work and for the rest I like to have a few laughs.” – Maggi Hambling

Maggi Hambling was born on October 23, 1945 in Sudbury, England. She is a British contemporary painter and sculptor. She is a household name in British art.

After studying art in the 1960’s she was the first artist in residence at the National Gallery in London.

Hambling works in a wide variety of subjects and materials. She is very well known for her work in sculpture as well as her portrait work, several of her portraits are in the National Portrait Gallery.

Her celebrated series of the North Sea has continued since late 2002. These evocative portraits of the wave, show the artist’s long-standing fascination with the elemental character of the North Sea. “As the waves of the North Sea voraciously consume our coast, these new paintings respond to the energy as they break.”

She has been awarded the prestigious CBE (order of the British Empire) by the Queen of England for her career in painting.

Maggie Hambling continues to pursue her practise of art in both painting and sculpture in a cottage in Suffolk, England.
