Day 30 – Inspired by Minnie Pwerle, Abstract Lines

May 30, 2020

Minnie Pwerle was an Australian Aboriginal artist. Minnie began painting in 2000 at about the age of 80, and her pictures soon became popular and sought-after works of contemporary Indigenous Australian art.

Her work is powerful and deceptively simple looking. I was inspired by this piece:

Dreaming – Minnie Pwerle

Supplies you will need:

  • watercolour or mixed media paper
  • gift card
  • small paint brush
  • black acrylic paint and any other colours you want

Start by scraping black acrylic paint over the surface of your paper using an old gift card. Ensure you hold the card firmly and upright so the paint is applied smoothly and thinly. Do another layer and let dry completely.

Next, I mixed a few paint colours and kept with pinks and reds for my creation. I used a small paintbrush to apply lines without planning too far in advance.

I have to say it was very relaxing and fun to do. I hope you make one too! Thank you so much for following along with sparking creativity every day in May.

Be sure to check out more of Minnie’s work, it’s completely mesmerizing.
