Day 23 – Tic-Tac-Turtle: Making your own fun and games

May 24, 2020

For today’s project, I thought we’d try something a little different! Other than doodling, painting rocks is one of my favorite relaxing activities. For today I thought it would be fun to show you how to make a tic-tac-toe board with Ladybugs and Turtles.

Supplies you will need:

  • 10 oval rocks for painting
  • red, green, black, white acrylic paint
  • cardboard (optional)
  • small and large brushes

I started by painting 5 of the rocks red and 5 green. After the base coats were painted I added a black face to the ladybug, a black line down the back, and polka dots. Using the back of my paintbrush I added two white circles for the eyes and when the white paint was dry, I added a second smaller black circle for the pupils.

For the turtles, I drew a hexagon on the back with black paint and drew lines coming down from the sides from the initial hexagon shape. I painted a curved line for the head. I painted inside the hexagons with a bit of the darker green mixed with white to make a lighter green, I left the face dark green. The eyes of the turtle are spread out closer to the edge and the nose is two little dots close together. I then used the back of my paintbrush to add little white dots to the eyes.

Once the ladybugs and turtles are dry you are ready to play tic tac toe. You could take them outside and draw # pattern with chalk on the sidewalk and play – or you can make a game board.

You can make your game board any colour you like! I used turquoise and black. I painted the entire cardboard turquoise and when it was completely dry added tape in # shape. Then using a damp sponge, painted in the squares black. Once this is dry you’ll have a permanent game board ready to play at any time.

If you are going to challenge someone to a virtual game on zoom. facetime or skype you could number the squares and your opponent could simply tell you where to place the ladybug or turtle.

You can paint any kind of animal to mark your pieces any way you like with any kind of decoration… I really hope you create a tic-tac-toe board and if you do send us a picture at artinactiontoronto@gmail.com.
